Solskjaer: Winning gives us energy
The boss praises Cavani, two standout performers and says our hectic schedule isn't a problem...
Ole is that mission accomplished, in that you were able to make changes, give some players a breather and make it through to the semi-finals? “Well, when you win games it doesn’t matter how you do it and you know you’ll have energy anyway. We could play tomorrow, now probably. We’ve won, we’ve gone through, so those changes probably don’t matter. If you lose, it’s like everyone’s happy. A result is the most important thing and we’ve gone through. The players know we trust them. We have a big squad and everyone has to step up at different times in the season. It’s a big game for players who haven’t played for a while, Axel for example and Eric, they’ve not played for a while. They did really well.!" Particularly that first half hour or so, it seemed to be very fluid in the movement. All that was missing was a goal wasn’t it? “Exactly. I can’t remember Dean having a touch on the ball really. You almost did an Everton on them, you were in the box, you had corners, you had set plays, crosses and chances. I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t go one or two goals up, but it was an excellent performance in the second half as well.” You will appreciate the quality of that finish from Edinson Cavani… “First of all, it’s great movement by Anthony, a great pass and a great touch to go past him on his first touch and you’ve just got to focus on hitting the corner. Keep it low, with a little bit of curve and it’s a top quality strike.” When you can bring on Marcus and Anthony it just shows the power we do have, and we finished it off… “Yeah, and sometimes you think with those players if we can stay in the game until there’s half an hour left, you know how quick and sharp they are and powerful and strong. Even Luke when he comes on, he runs down the line and gives us something extra. It’s important to have a squad and have players that can come in and make a difference and they did.” Another semi-final as well… is this going to be the year? “Of course, we want to be a team that learns and improves. Let’s see if we’ve improved from last year. Can we take it one step further, get to the final? If you do, let’s see…”
