Ole's post-match press conference
See what Solskjaer said to the media at Molineux after United's 2-1 defeat...
What was your assessment of that performance today? OGS: Very good start, should have been three up, should’ve, could’ve, maybe should’ve. And we created our own downfall. Very good performance until they scored the second goal, I have to say. But from ten minutes after they scored, the one each goal, we seemed flustered. Then we got back into it. But for their keeper, we should have won this game. The experiment with Ashley Young at the back seemed to work for the first 25 minutes. What did you think of putting him there instead of Phil or Marcus? OGS: Ashley has done that before against PSG away, did ok, I felt. So, I felt Ash gave us the outlet when we had three centre backs, to go forward. He created some moments down that side. But then again, that’s what you, I thought he did what he was asked to do. That’s three defeats in four games now. Is it kind of resetting now after the start you had? That it’s just settling down a bit? OGS: We don’t look at it as that, but you can’t control the result. Can you? We can control what we do on the pitch, performance wise, and we’ve played well enough tonight, we created enough chances to win the game. So, I don’t think there’s any kick back or re-setting, to be fair. I was very pleased with the amount of chances, and the intent with the way we started the game. Apart from as I said, you cannot stop players playing, or trying, and if there’s a mistake to be done, that happens, and that’s football. Are you disappointed that Ashley decided to make that challenge so closely after receiving his first yellow? OGS: Yeah of course, when you’re on a yellow before, you’re always in danger if you go down and hit the ball first then follow through, and it’s a yellow card again. Probably a bad decision. But in the heat of the moment, that’s what he felt like he reached the ball, and he was just a little bit too high. It made it more difficult, but I felt like, for two or three minutes, yeah we were under pressure after they got against ten men. But then we settled down, and I think we, we didn’t get the pressure built that we expected that they had. So we kept possession well, but then they scored on the first chance, with the first time they put the ball in the box, really. Paul Pogba hasn’t been as productive for the past six or seven games, how do you explain the change in his performance? OGS: Well sometimes, today he could have easily had an assist, when great play with him and Rom, so that’s just figure and numbers, and Paul’s working as hard as any of the players in the team. Some days it just doesn’t come off. Are you as confident about a top four finish as you were maybe 2/3 hours ago? OGS: As I was three hours ago? I’ve said, we need 15 points in the last seven games, or 18 in the last eight, so before the international break. We’ve got three against Watford, we need 15 in the last six. So, we don’t have room for many more losses. It’s a difficult run as well… OGS: Yeah, it is, but then again, we are a very good team as well. So it’ll be difficult for the ones who have to play against us as well. This was always going to be a tough game, and the performance deserved a win. What do you think you need to improve, thinking toward the game against Barcelona? OGS: Oh, many, many things we have to improve, of course. Because they are a top, top side, but we’ll use one or two days now to analyse and recover. And we’ll prepare for Barcelona, which will be a fantastic challenge, for the club, and for the team. You said it was probably a bad decision, do you mean Ashley’s choice? OGS: Yeah yeah yeah, to go down. It was a good decision by the referee. Ash, when you know you’re on a yellow card, you’re always in danger of getting a sending off if you mistime your tackle. And it’s one of them. I think Ash would have liked to stay on his feet. Is it difficult to explain the result today by the game itself, because of all the goals, you get a sending off, lots of the ball, and own goals? Yeah, but that’s football for you, that’s why it’s the game we all love, that’s why you cannot always, it’s not like maths. Some days you have the margins, their keeper today had a fantastic performance, Romelu played some great crosses in, he got a great cross from Diogo. Those three crosses, from three yards in total, probably should all have been goals, normally. But their keeper was in a great position and had some fantastic saves. That’s just football. First goal for Scott McTominay, how good can he become? OGS: Scott has never ever let us down, and he never disappoints when he plays, and today was another very, very fine performance by Scotty. So, it won’t be hard to see him play for Man United many, many games, because he’s got such a great mentality. He’s so athletic, he can play in different positions. Today we feel that’s his best position, like a high midfielder, but he can play that defensive role easily like he has done against PSG and Liverpool, so I was very, very pleased with him.
