Ole's verdict on five-star win
Hear from the boss on Rashford, Telles and the performance, after a great night in the Champions League...
Q: It must be such a satisfying night? OGS: “Oh yeah, when you can sit down and relax when you go 3-0 up and just enjoy it, but you can only do that if the players do the ground work first, or the coaches [get] the preparation for the game spot on and players [are] so concentrated and focused doing their jobs. Of course, we played a different way today which has opened so many chances for us to play a different way.” Q: We played a different way in Paris, a different way against Chelsea and then a different way tonight - three different ways in three different games. It must be useful for a coach to have that? OGS: “Yeah, of course, and we worked really hard last year to get a foundation in place and principles in place. Now you can start tweaking things because it’s not a big difference, but slight things. But the main thing is how you cover the ground, how you work for your team-mate, how you sacrifice if someone makes a mistake, you make it up for him. Today I thought every single one did a job for his mate.” Q: Mason with a great finish - you’d have enjoyed that one I guess? OGS: “He’s top in front of goal, so efficient. [It was a] great pass by Paul, good run, great timing and you can’t fault Mason when he’s in front of goal.” Q: You’ve got to concentrate defensively against a team like that and that was notable tonight… OGS: “Yeah it was. We defended really well and that’s very important when you win the ball back, but then when you have it they are so quick to counter press you. They are so energetic. [In the] first half, it was hard to play through the press, but we kept at it. The boys never didn’t want the ball; they always wanted it in tight situations and that pays dividends in the second half when you play, spaces open up and in the end you win by a comfortable margin in a very difficult game.” Q: Marcus can do no wrong - a first hat-trick for him… OGS: “I’m so pleased for him, very happy. You know he was rested today because he’s played so many games lately, him and Bruno [Fernandes] and Scott [McTominay] - they all took that as no problem because we are part of a team and he came on and showed ‘no problem, I’ll do it from here’.” Q: in this group you’ve now beaten the Champions League finalists and semi-finalists and you’re now in a brilliant position in this group with four games to play… OGS: We’ve started really well. Of course, we came back after the international break knowing that this month is going to be a testing one and we’ve started well. But there are three massive games coming up. Three games in six days, so we’ll have to rotate. We’ll have to repair and rest and recover.” Q: Just on the squad - Alex Telles was not involved tonight, can you tell us what the situation is? OGS: “He’s been out now for a little while. He’s tested positive for the coronavirus. But he has no symptoms; he’s fine and we can’t wait to get him back.”
