Solskjaer's verdict on securing third place
Watch as the manager reacts to the win, earning third place, Champions League football and much more...
Job done – how does it feel? Yeah, it was a massive achievement by the players to get third, from where we’ve been this season. I think it’s a mental barrier passed as well for the boys, winning a big game, because we’ve lost when we’ve been to the semis in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup. Of course, to take it, we knew today, we needed a result and now we can move on the next bit and that’s for these boys to win something. When we spoke a year ago, you wanted the team more mentally and physically robust so did we see that in action today? I think we’ve seen it the whole season, it’s not been easy playing for Manchester United, if you look back and if you read all the papers – blah, blah, blah. I’ve actually done that the last few days and we were predicted [to finish] about sixth position and we’ve ended up third. Liverpool and City, of course, have been running away with it in the last couple of seasons so to get third is a massive achievement for the team. The players and the staff have worked so hard. I told them this morning, we’ve won [already] because we’ve come together as a team. Your viewers, our fans, know that as well. We are going places and we’ve got a team you can like. You can see the DNA of Manchester United. At least that’s what I feel. Today was not a classic Manchester United performance but, in the first half, we controlled it and, in the second half, when they had to come for us, we defended really well. Was it fitting that Bruno got the key goal – his 10th here? He’s had a massive impact since he came into the club, in the last day of the transfer window, and he’s been excellent since he came in. Of course, you can see he’s tired now, his legs, his head and things go a little bit slower but that’s fine. But we have got to get used to that next year. We’re not in the Europa League, we’re in the Champions League and he’ll play as I can’t rest players in the Champions League as we have done in the Europa League. So we’ll demand more of him. It’s been tough for Jesse but everybody ran towards him when he scored… He’s had a difficult season and a difficult year but everyone has that throughout a career, or a life, and has been through it and come through it. He’s been excellent in training – lively and bubbly – and I’m very, very happy for him to get the final goal of the Premier League season for us. Is it now all about winning a trophy? I was saying here – I want these boys to feel how it is to win something with this club. That is different. Third is the Champions League but winning is what matters here.
