Jones pleased with Partizan victory
Check out what our centre-back had to say after our first away win of the season...
Phil, well done, it was a good win tonight… Yeah, they’re never easy places to come these. Anyone who thought we were going to come here and roll them over were very wrong. I thought we dug in well, but we conceded too many chances at times, it was open. But they’re going to put you under pressure when you come to places like these. We dug deep. I thought Jimmy Garner in the middle of the park, and Brandon were absolutely outstanding tonight. The pair of them to come into a hostile environment tonight, away in Europe, they should be very proud of themselves. How much would those boys aged at 18 and 19 learn from playing an occasion like this? It’s a huge experience at such a young age. Both did very well and both look comfortable at this level. They’ve got a very big future, the pair of them. You played as part of a back three, and then it seemed to change to a back four and you went to right-back. How difficult was that to swap positions? Yeah, I’ve not played there in a while. I was on a yellow card as well so I had to be cautious and the winger was pretty quick to be fair. I tried the best I could and thankfully we got the clean sheet as well and the three points. There was talk in advance about the atmosphere. What was it like out there? It was good. That’s what you expect when you come to places like this, you know it’s going to be a hostile environment. These are the nights you want to play in and be a part of and, yeah, we got the win and we’ll head on. You got the penalty – the person you wanted to take it would have been the coolest head in Belgrade, Anthony Martial? Yeah, I had every faith that he would put that one in the back of the net and he confidently put it in and got the win for us. If we win the return game we could be through with two games to spare – I suppose that is the ideal scenario? Yeah for sure. We want to get the group tied up as quick as possible, but there’s no easy games in Europe and we’ll treat it like we’ve done tonight and approach it in the right way. And we can get the monkey off our back – first away win in a while? Yeah, do you know what, even going into the game tonight I completely didn’t even realise about that stat, but it’s nice. We need to progress and kick on and improve.
