Solskjaer's press conference
Ole came out to face the press after Thursday's Premier League reverse against Liverpool...
How do you sum that up and how disruptive was your day? ”Of course, it is a disappointing result, a disappointing performance especially in periods. We did well in long spells as well I have to say but we didn’t capitalise well enough in the good periods and we concede goals at very bad times during the game, just before half-time was a kick in the teeth and then another just after half-time was another kick in the teeth. We had chances just after we got to 3-2 , big chances and had the momentum to get back into the game properly, unfortunately we didn’t take them.” Can you give us an insight into the difficulties of having three games in five days, the stuff with the fans, staying at Old Trafford rather than the Lowry? Just how much did that play a part in the performance? “The players handled the situation well, you know none of them have been complaining, they have just got on with it. We know that it was going to happen anyway so there was no point losing energy on what you can’t control. But, of course, the preparation has been different. We are not going to make an excuse of that. I think everyone can, or maybe not everyone, but everyone who has played at this level at this intensity, they know that attention to detail is so important and that is why we prepare in a certain way for every game. We couldn’t do that but as I said I thought the players handled it really well and though we haven’t got the result and we haven’t got the performances so it has probably affected them a little bit but, as I said, none of the players were making it an excuse.” Overall your side's defensive record is not too bad but you concede goals with quite a few mistakes in them. How would you assess your defence as a whole? “Obviously today the goals we conceded, set plays disappointing, that’s a situation we don’t defend well enough and that is something we have to work on because we have conceded too many goals from it. The third one we want to play out, we have been good at playing out, we put pressure on them to play out. Sometimes we have scored goals from it, today unfortunately the two or three mistakes that happened cost us a goal. But they tried to correct it by winning it back and then we lost it after winning it back so football would be really boring if no-one made a mistake That is the whole idea of football. Of course you try to eradicate them and work on them, but we have conceded too many goals and we could have avoided some of these and especially the timings of them.” How vital against Fulham is it then to get a clean sheet to get used to that with the big game against Villarreal at the end of the month? “We are going to use the next few days well to recover physically and mentally and then we have to prepare for Fulham and then Wolverhampton and then the final. We should have more energy. We should use this period well, more energy means a better press, a better press means less chances against. Our forwards they had spent a lot of energy pressing. Maybe lately we haven’t seen too much of that because it is the end of the season and this is the end of a very, very hard week but we will work on it and brush up on a few details, pay attention to some details on the set plays and put the players in the frame of mind that these set plays are vital in football. At least a third of goals probably are conceded in football. But we can do so much better and when we do that we will improve.” Still on a defensive theme, how much is the team missing Harry Maguire on the pitch and his presence? “Harry has been amazing since he came to the club. He has been more or less ever-present so of course when a player is a leader, a captain, the status of him, his presence is missed. But then we have players who can come and it is a chance for everyone to take on that little bit of leadership. We need to do that when he is gone. You can hear him in the stands when he is not playing. he is important for us and someone else just has to take that responsibility now. I am sure that in the next two games we will be without him. Hopefully we can get him back for the final but who knows? I don’t know yet.”
