United 2 City 0: Ole's press conference
In his press conference, Ole was asked if Fernandes and Martial had worked on their free-kick during training...
You must be delight with that performance? Yeah, the result is always the deciding factor. I’m so happy with a win and another three points. The performance was as as expected against them because you now that you have to defend well. They do play that sort of football that you haver to drop deep at times, but I thought in the first half, when we pressed high up we made them make mistakes. The first 15/20 minutes were harder than maybe than we should have made it. We started hurrying them and harassing them higher up and created chances, we had some big ones. That’s a change to how you played against them recently; it didn’t feel like such a counter-attacking performance? No, we’ve tried before to do that because we know that the more you can keep them out of their rhythm and make mistakes, it gives you a better chance. They’re so good and comfortable and, of course, Pep wants them to play out from the back. But it’s an absolute privilege to have players like this. The commitment, desire, the hard work they put in and have the humility to know we have to work our socks off. That’s what I think the fans love about this group of players. I think the connection is there to be seen. Do you think that is the most complete team performance, to stop a free-flowing City side from having many chances at all? You can say that and off the ball, I thought defensively we did excellent. Our counter attack was excellent. We’re dangerous, but we would like to keep the ball more often and defend with the ball and keep the running more. We still created big enough chances to win by more, but then David had a few saves and they had a few opportunities. But it’s one of the best ones, yeah. Have you worked on that free-kick in training? Well, we work on everything. Of course, Bruno and Anto are practising free-kicks and set plays and you have a couple of different options. I expected him to cross that one because we have superiority in the air, but they found a connection. He seems to have energised the whole place. Yeah, the whole club. He has everything I spoke about: he works hard, he’s humble, he has the desire and commitment, but he’s also got the x factor. He’s a risk taker and has courage. He’s brave enough to make mistakes and if you make enough mistakes they’ll be corrected into fantastic assists or goals. Pep looked like he was trying to rile him and he did the little sssh gesture. Is that the sort of thing that United need? You need character here at this club, and this team have that. They’ve learned through some hard times this season because we’ve been a young side and we have started something we believe in and Bruno has helped that. It’s the first league double over City for 10 years. With the progress you’ve made this season and the right additions in the summer, do you think you could be in a position to challenge? We feel we’re improving all the time and we know we lack one, two or three players and some experience, to be considered a title contender. We know that and we’re not going to start talking about that now, we’re going start talking about getup up the table, getting more points and challenging for that top four because Chelsea and Leicester are too far ahead of us for my liking. Ole, to make United champions again you’ll have to overcome two of the greatest managers Klopp and Guardiola. You’ve beaten Guardiola three times, do you believe your are that manager? I haven’t beaten Pep three times, it’s my players that have. Yes, I do believe in my capabilities of improving this club as much as I can. That was a ninth clean sheet in the last 12 games… Eight in 10 and the two goals we conceded… one shouldn’t be given because the ball is rolling. VAR should have been there and David’s, we know. We’re getting there and we’re getting better. What has been the key to that? Time and quality players. I’ve got good players: Harry, Victor and David have been excellent. Eric has come in and and gave us a challenge. Luke Shaw has been top class. Aaron, you saw his performance today and Brandon is not phased by anything. It’s just continuing work on the field, with Kieran and Michael. They’ve helped them a lot. Ole who were you seeking after the second goal? My family. That must have been a special moment for you? Yeah, of course, because we should have done this to Liverpool earlier and then you’re thinking ‘is this not going to be?’ when we missed opportunities to make it 2-0. It’s great that we managed to get another one. It looked like Fred was caught in the first half… It’s a penalty, a clear penalty. Did ask Mike Dean why it wasn’t given? Yeah, they checked it, apparently. Well, we’ve got different eyes. What message does this send to the wider football world? You tell me. For me, it shows we’re on the right tack and we’re improving. We are Man United and we are looking towards catching the teams in front of us. But, this is one game. Now it’s n to Thursday and Sunday, which are big games for us. When McTominay scored, have you heard Old Trafford make that noise? Probably not, no. What about when you were playing? I don’t know. I was probably more used to it then. The fans are fantastic. The connection between the fans and the team means a lot to me. I think they know that and I want our fans to know what these players want to do and what they’re about. They’re about hard work and desire. I see them every day and they give absolutely everything. There’s not many egos here in that team. Luke, from a confidence point of view, there seems to have been an enormous change from him in the last six weeks… He was voted Player of the Year last season by the players. He’s improving and he’s a top boy that we want to give him the opportunity to be the best he can be. I think he’s potentially the best left-back in England. Maybe even more. Is that his best position, left of a three? I’ve got faith in him there and he still provides crosses and overlapping runs from there. I think he’s been excellent there.
