Solskjaer's press conference
See what the boss said to the press after the game in Gdansk...
Q: Was the defeat down to misfortune or was there more to the defeat?
“Well you know when it goes to penalties then anything can happen. I have got to say that the penalty shoot-out was high quality but we didn’t do enough in 120 minutes to score more goals and that is the disappointing bit that we built pressure that we had moments when we felt that if we could just kick on a little bit now then you can get the goal but we just couldn’t.”
Q: On big nights you need your big names to deliver. Tonight they didn’t. Is that a disappointment?
“Yes, you know you have got players with high quality there. We started with loads of goalscorers, match winners and we hoped that would give us the upper-hand. But we just couldn’t get the first goal. Disappointed that we concede with the first chance, the only shot they have got on target. That is disappointing of course and after we scored we pushed on for about five or 10 minutes and it looked like the game was there for us but then we just couldn’t kick on."
“Scott McTominay was absolutely outstanding out there. For me he was the best player on the pitch.”
Q: Waited late to make your first change. Was that because of the lack of options you had on the bench in terms of game changers and with that in mind have you a big summer ahead in terms of needing to strengthen?
“We felt the players out there, you have got Mason, Marcus match winners in their own right. Bruno, Edi of course they can create anything. Scott as I said was the best player on the pitch and Paul. So it is difficult to make that change especially when Fred has been injured for a week and he came on and he did well the boy. But just couldn’t create enough chances to win the game. When they have Torres and Albiol in there to make crosses it is always going to be difficult. we needed to pay our way into the box quicker.”
Q: Can you call this a successful season having finished second in the Premier League but lost the Europa League final?
“No it is not a successful season of course and that is the fine margins in football. Sometimes one kick can define a season as a good one or a successful one and one kick says it is not. Improvement? Yes. Second in the league. Probably no-one expected us to be second in the league after the start we had, after the lack of pre-season we had. But the boys have been really, really good, but just came up short tonight unfortunately. But that is on penalties which we could have been sat here saying it has been a successful season after the same game. But trophies matter and that is what matters at this club so no is the short answer.”
Q: Looked like Bruno said to go second for the shoot-out, stats show it’s more likely you win if you go first. Was he aware of that, is that what happened?
“I’ve not asked Bruno who won the toss, I let him get on with it. Penalty takers were confident, we made some changes to get them on to take the penalties and just couldn’t stop them scoring.”
Q: Are you bottling today’s disappointment to use to help next season?
“Yeah of course, we need to. That disappointment is the worst feeling. These are the moments you remember most in your career as a player, as a manager and there’s two ways [you can go about it] – you can feel sorry for yourself and go on holiday and don’t do anything about it or you can go home and do something about it and come back even better, stronger, more hungry, ready from the first minute because we know that we didn’t start this season great. We feel behind, too far behind to be challenging for the league so we need to start really well.”
Q: Given David’s penalty record did you consider bringing Dean on? He saved one last year against City.
“You go through every scenario, of course and it has crossed my mind in the build-up to the game but we were confident in David. We prepared but in a penalty shoot-out anything can happen in those so I stuck with the keeper who played all the game.”
Q: Do you need the owners to back you in the transfer market to strengthen the squad and challenge City?
“I’ve been delighted with the effort, desire, determination of all the players. I can’t fault them at all and we’ve probably done as well as anyone could have imagined. So yeah, we who are here now need to do better, we need to work better, work harder, cleverer. But as I’ve said, two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad all together. It’s important for us to go even further because I’m sure our challengers will also want to improve so we will want to improve as much as we can.”
