Ole's verdict on United 1 PSG 3
Watch as Solskjaer discusses our performance, missed chances, Fred's red card and the situation in Group H...
Sometimes Ole, in football, I don’t think you get what you deserve. Is that the case tonight? “I think so. I think you look back at that game and the chances we created and you feel we deserve to go through. But you need to be more clinical, you need to take your chances, definitely. But you’ve got to say the boys did create them moments and chances, that’s the big positive.” Of course it was a bad start and, after a rocky first 15-20 minutes, you must have been delighted with the way the guys turned it around? “Great reaction. We got our composure back, we dominated the game and scored a goal. It was deflected but well done by Aaron. Then again second half, until they score, we should have finished the game off. We should have been more clinical, of course, we know that. More quality in the last finish and then you’re celebrating. It’s half a centimetre, half an inch. We’re a bit unlucky with Aaron’s right heel or something that’s just in line with Marquinhos. I thought it was offside, but it’s just fine margins and we look forward to next week. We’ll still go there and get something out of it.” It definitely is fine margins, particularly with that wonderful chip from Cavani off the bar. Anthony obviously had a great chance, that changes the game doesn’t it? “Yes, but that’s football. It’s always decided in the boxes with that quality. Sometimes it goes for you, sometimes against you and definitely tonight it went against us. We didn’t deserve to lose.” In the space of two minutes, there was the Marquinhos goal – questionable whether it was onside or off – and then the second yellow, which looked to us at least like a perfectly reasonable challenge… “Yes, that’s not a yellow card, we know that. The referee, when he sees it, he knows he’s made a mistake. That’s something that sometimes happens. You can’t do anything about it unfortunately, but it was a clear and obvious error. Maybe he was a bit lucky to stay on the pitch in the first half, but he definitely didn’t deserve a yellow for that one.” I suppose he walks a bit of a tightrope after the first half, and yet when he puts in a clean challenge like that it must be extremely frustrating? “Very frustrating. [It’s] a clean challenge, a fair challenge. He played really well. Fred is so energetic out there. He’ll hold his hands up and say sorry, but you can’t be sorry for winning the ball, can you?” So now it goes down to the final day. Does the performance tonight give you some confident going to Germany next week? “Yes, not just confidence but I see the way we’ve developed as a team and a group. I think we’ve shown tonight that we can get on the ball and dominate and not just counter-attack. We are deadly on counter-attacks as well, but unfortunately we didn’t score.” Do the boys need lifting? How’s the dressing room? “They don’t need lifting, we’ve just got to make sure we don’t drop our heads. That’s football. You’ve got a big game against West Ham already on Saturday and then Tuesday Leipzig, so it’s a great week.”
