A favourite of fans and club legends alike, 1993/94’s black away kit was the result of changing regulations. The FA had previously banned black shirts as the colour was worn by referees. In 1992, as the Premier League began, this restriction was lifted but it took clubs a year to react.

Narrowly beaten to the claim of ‘first black kit in the league’ by QPR, United’s 1993/94 away kit would be the better remembered effort. Worn for two seasons, the kit saw the club’s first Double, Andy Cole’s debut season, and a moment of madness at Selhurst Park.
