In 1983, Norman Whiteside became the youngest player to score in a League Cup final, at 17 years and 323 days. Although United lost to Liverpool at Wembley, this record lives on, and Whiteside’s shirt has recently joined the Manchester United collection.
Although 1982/83 had seen Sharp Electronics become United’s first shirt sponsor, advertising rules and regulations prevented the logo being worn for broadcast matches. The televised League Cup final was no exception, and the strip remained plain.
