An injury sustained on international duty had prevented Wayne Rooney, then the world’s most expensive teenager, from making his Manchester United debut. Eventually, on 28 September 2004, Rooney strode out onto the Old Trafford pitch to face Fenerbahce.  Within 17 minutes he had scored his first goal of the game. Two more followed to ensure he netted a first career hat-trick.

Before the game, Rooney had felt restricted in his shirt and ripped it at the collar. Following the match, the club issued a statement discouraging young fans from copying this with their replica kits.
