As synthetic materials were introduced to football, kits became more garish. Although this had an impact on outfield players, manufacturers seemed to save their most startling designs for goalkeepers. These wild patterns made already gigantic keepers look still bigger, and Peter Schmeichel took advantage of this, by wearing a kit one size too large.

The concern that keepers should be kept warm also meant that their ’90s kits were made from a quilted material which padded their leaps and bounds around the goalmouth.
