United's Under-18s slipped to a 2-1 home defeat against Crystal Palace at Carrington.
All the goals came in the second half in wintry conditions as the Londoners collected their first victory in the Elite Group.
The first half was scrappy at times with the Eagles creating the better chances as full-back Jerome Williams rolled a shot past Jonny Sutherland but hit a post after only three minutes.
After Callum Evans drilled wide, Sam Byrne forced a spectacular save out of David Gregory but a sensational run by man-of-the-match Reise Allassani should have resulted in a goal for Derek Tieku, who spurned a clear opening. Javen Palmer also made a hash of a far-post header on the stroke of half-time, although he looked offside in any case.
Opportunities continued to be created in the second period and two goals inside a minute really enlivened proceedings. A short corner allowed Alassani to make the most of some space outside the area to float a cross-cum-shot over Sutherland and in at the far post.
United's response was impressive as Palace contested a free-kick awarded for a foul on Evans and dead-ball expert Andreas Pereira's set-piece crashed against the underside of the bar with Byrne on hand to nod the rebound into an empty net.
