How to follow our Sheffield United game

Tuesday 23 April 2024 15:35

Manchester United host Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, in a Premier League game rearranged from its original slot last month.

We were meant to take on the Blades on Saturday 16 March, but the clash with our Emirates FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool meant the fixture had to be moved.

Erik ten Hag’s side are looking for a first top-flight victory in six weeks, with the 2-0 success over Everton on 10 March being the only time in the last seven matches that we’ve taken all three points from a league fixture.

Last time out, Wednesday’s opponents suffered a damaging defeat at home to Saturday’s visitors Burnley. They now sit 10 points from safety, with just five games left to play.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the first of two M16 outings in quick succession…

Here's all you need to know about our squad, before the match against the Blades.

HOW CAN I FOLLOW THE GAME?

Kick-off is at 20:00 BST on Wednesday but the game is not being shown live on television in the UK. However, as with all first-team fixtures, you can listen to live radio commentary on MUTV, ManUtd.com and the United App.

Either side of the audio, we'll stream live pre-match and post-match shows from Old Trafford, bringing you all the build-up from 18:55 BST, plus exclusive interviews with our manager and players after the final whistle.

Highlights of the game will be available across our platforms from midnight, around two hours after the final whistle.

TEAM NEWS

United’s dramatic victory over Coventry City on Sunday has seemingly come at a cost, with Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford both rated doubtful. Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho also have fitness issues, but Ten Hag is hoping the pair can be involved.

Sofyan Amrabat, Willy Kambwala and Mason Mount were added to the Reds’ lengthy injury list before the Wembley trip, meaning Casemiro had to play at centre-back against the Sky Blues.

As it stands, Harry Maguire is the only fit senior central defender, as Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are all still absent.

Sheffield United have their own long-standing problems at the back, with George Baldock, Chris Basham, John Egan, Max Lowe and Rhys Norrington-Davies all ruled out.

THE OPPOSITION

It’s been a difficult campaign for Wednesday’s visitors, who replaced boss Paul Heckingbottom with Wilder in December. Results under the born-and-bred Blade haven’t picked up sufficiently, though, and after Saturday’s 4-1 reverse to Burnley, survival looks a virtually impossible task.

The South Yorkshire club sold key players Sander Berge and Iliman Ndiaye before the season started and took just one point from their opening 10 games, a run which included a record 8-0 home reverse to Newcastle United.

Conceding goals has been a major issue, with 88 shipped in 33 fixtures so far, although they have picked up a little at the other end of the pitch recently, drawing 2-2 with Bournemouth and Chelsea and 3-3 with Fulham.

PAST MEETINGS

The Blades could be buoyed by recent history in this fixture. It took a late Diogo Dalot wonder strike to settle the reverse game 2-1 in our favour, while Sheffield United won at Old Trafford on their last visit, behind closed doors, in January 2021.

Former Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire was on target for us that evening, but goals from Kean Bryan and Oliver Burke secured a shock 2-1 victory for the away side.

That is the Steel City’s club only win over the Reds in the last 10 league meetings - we have won eight and drawn one of the other nine.
