Match summary: United U18s v Derby

Saturday 07 October 2023 14:15

Manchester United’s Under-18s maintained their perfect start to the domestic season by coming from behind to defeat Derby County at Carrington on Saturday.

Jaydan Davidson hit the post for Derby early on, and his team-mate Lennon Wheeldon went one better just before the half-hour mark, when he rounded United goalkeeper Thomas Myles to give the visitors a half-time lead.

The Reds had to remain patient in attack to get back into the contest, with a triple change on the hour mark helping to change the course of the game.

Ethan Wheatley equalises from the penalty spot.

Ethan Wheatley was among the trio of reinforcements, and within 10 minutes of coming on, he struck our equalising goal.

Wheatley combined with fellow substitute, Jack Fletcher, to surge into the box, where he was brought down and awarded a penalty, which he placed straight down the middle.

United took the lead seven minutes later when Harry Amass teed up captain Finley McAllister to curl into the bottom right corner from the edge of the area.

The Reds made sure of the win with two minutes of the 90 remaining, after Myles had made a vital save at the other end to keep out Wheeldon. United then countered quickly for Malachi Sharpe to go through on goal and provide a composed finish.

It’s now six wins from six for United in the U18 Premier League and next up is a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a fortnight’s time.

Shea Lacey battles for possession for the Reds.
