October's Player of the Month shortlist

Tuesday 31 October 2023 12:00

It has been another mixed month for Manchester United, with three successive victories bookended by home defeats to Galatasaray and Manchester City.

There was general consensus around who should be our three candidates for October's individual monthly award, with Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay and Andre Onana in the running for the trophy.

Rasmus Hojlund also entered the conversation, particularly on the back of his outstanding two-goal showing against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League, but we outline the reasons for our choices below and offer you the chance to cast your vote in our poll.

The winner will be announced on Friday.

Who was United's Player of the Month in October?

HARRY MAGUIRE: 4 appearances | 1 goal | 1 MOTM

The defender returned to the starting line-up for the dramatic win over Brentford and has not looked back since. He made a crucial contribution in the 2-1 victory over the Bees, climbing to head across for McTominay to nod the winner.

He followed it up with a Man-of-the-Match performance at former club Sheffield United, producing a resolute display at the heart of the back four in the 2-1 success at Bramall Lane. A first goal for the Reds since the win at Leeds United in February last year then earned three points from the key Champions League tie with FC Copenhagen, as he headed home Christian Eriksen's pinpoint cross.

Even in the derby defeat to Manchester City, he was one of our better performers on the day, and there is no doubting his strong claims for this accolade.

SCOTT McTOMINAY: 3 (1) appearances | 3 goals | 1 MOTM

The homegrown midfielder inspired an incredibly dramatic fightback against Brentford with his two goals, to lift the mood going into the international break. Putting aside the frustration at seeing a cracking free-kick for Scotland in Spain disallowed by VAR, he returned to club action with another goal, again showing neat control and composure inside the box to fire home the opener at Sheffield United.

In the last two matches, he has only been kept off the scoresheet by fabulous saves from the opposing keepers. In the Copenhagen tie, a corner should have been awarded when Kamil Grabara's fingertips diverted his shot wide, and he had a couple of attempts against City, the best of which forced a flying one-handed stop out of Ederson.

Harry Maguire and Andre Onana were the heroes of the win over FC Copenhagen.

ANDRE ONANA: 5 appearances | 1 clean sheet | 1 MOTM

The Cameroon international has shown the qualities that convinced the Reds to bring him to Old Trafford from Internazionale in the summer. Although he will have been disappointed with Brentford's goal, he pulled off a couple of smart stops that actually provided the launchpad for the astonishing comeback.

A good performance followed in the victory at Sheffield United, as he made a number of key saves, including one to thwart Oli McBurnie in the first half. Although beaten by McBurnie's penalty in that game, he was to emerge as the hero when Jordan Larsson stepped up at the death to try to earn Copenhagen a point from our Group A game in Europe.

The stunning diving spot-kick stop brought the house down and he was kept busy in the derby last time out, making one extraordinary save to repel an Erling Haaland header.
