Under-21s: United v Stoke City

Saturday 26 August 2023 14:30

Manchester United's senior Academy side achieved an extraordinary win at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday afternoon, triumphing 10-1 in our third Premier League 2 fixture of the season.

Isak Hansen-Aarøen set the tone in the 8th minute and Mateo Mejia doubled our lead in the 23rd with a delivery that looped into the net off Lewis Macari, grandson of United legend and MUTV pundit Lou Macari.

A quickfire double from Ethan Williams just after the half-hour mark made it 4-0, before Maxi Oyedele further increased the advantage. And although an unfortunate own goal by Willy Kambwala put Stoke on the scoreboard, the five-goal cushion was restored by Joe Hugill's injury-time penalty, awarded for a foul on Williams.

The ruthless attacking continued in the second period as Mejia and Hansen-Aaroen both completed their doubles before substitutes Ethan Wheatley and finally Sam Mather, with United's tenth goal from a wonderful free-kick, got in on the act.

This home triumph, added to the Under-18s' earlier 4-1 win away to Stoke, made it a very enjoyable day for all connected with United's Academy.
