Academy host trailblazer event

The Manchester United Academy hosted a diversity workshop with our Under-15s and Under-16s last week.

The enrichment programme event celebrated the heritage of the club’s players throughout its history.

Last season’s education initiative commemorated the life and career of United’s first black player, Dennis Walker. This year, the group worked together to create a heritage XI consisting of former Reds from 11 different countries.

Former Red Denis Irwin attended the session and spoke to the group about the trailblazers that became the first from each continent to play for United.

Irwin discussed his experiences of playing in a multicultural team, with more international players beginning to arrive at Old Trafford during his time at the club.

He also highlighted the importance of allyship and the support that team-mates can give to each other in the face of adversity.

The project will continue in collaboration with Konami, with each boy building a team on eFootball 2022 (formerly known as Pro Evolution Soccer), before competing against each other on the game.
