Manchester United have won our first major trophy in six years, defeating Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Casemiro’s bullet header opened the scoring midway through the first half before Marcus Rashford doubled our lead with a shot that took a deflection off Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

Newcastle did test David De Gea’s goal during the second half, but after defending stoutly, the Reds managed to claim victory in London and would have extended the lead but for Loris Karius's heroics. 

Erik ten Hag has now picked up his first piece of silverware as United manager, in his first season since joining from Ajax.

FIRST HALF - REDS AT THE DOUBLE

Both sides started with quick counter-attacks to try to catch the other team out. United’s first chance came when Wout Weghorst played a great pass to Rashford, and the in-form forward turned and attempted to feed a pass in to Bruno Fernandes, but this was cleared by the Newcastle defence. Meanwhile, Allan Saint-Maximin's tricky run down the left wing forced Fred to make a wonderful tackle.

The best attempt in the early exchanges for the Reds came 12 minutes into the final. Diogo Dalot’s cross picked out the head of Fred, who guided it behind him to Weghorst. The Dutch forward managed to get the best of Fabian Schar and Sean Longstaff before firing a shot straight at Loris Karius. As for Magpies, they broke quickly down the right-hand side with Kieran Trippier. The England international found the run of Sean Longstaff and the Newcastle-born midfielder fired a low cross dangerously across goal.

Then the game really came to life. Luke Shaw whipped in a wonderful free-kick and Casemiro rose high into the air and nodded the ball past the debuting Karius to open the scoring. VAR checked the goal, but Callum Wilson’s foot appeared to keep our Brazilian star onside and the goal stood as Wembley erupted for a second time.

Moments later, man-of-the-moment Rashford took centre stage. Starting on the left, United’s no.10 linked up well with Weghorst and the Dutchman made a beautiful run into Newcastle territory. He made a great pass to Rashford and our top scorer's shot took a big deflection off Botman and over the head of Karius to double the advantage. Initially recorded as an own goal, it was eventually given to Marcus, bringning his tally for the season to 25 in all competitions.

And just before the half was about to conclude, Weghorst nearly grabbed a third for Ten Hag’s men. Antony sent the Dutch forward through on goal after some wonderful trickery, beating Dan Burn down the right flank, Weghorst composed himself and fired a long-range shot which forced Karius to make a great save.

SECOND HALF - UNITED CLINCH THE CUP!

Only 30 seconds into the half, United looked to try and put the game out of sight. Rashford fed a short pass into the path of Fred, but his side-footed effort went wide of the post. A minute later, Antony looked to get in on the action, using a trademark curling effort from the right-hand side which fell straight into Karius’s gloves.

The Magpies spent the majority of the first 15 minutes of the second half looking for a lifeline back into the final, but wayward passes from Saint-Maximin kept the Toon Army from having a real attempt on United goal. The best chance fell to Joelinton, who had two big opportunities to score in the space of a few seconds, the first taking a huge block from substitute Aaron Wan-Bissaka and the second ricocheting off Lisandro Martinez.

After seeing off the threat of Newcastle’s attack, Rashford threatened once again. Substitute Marcel Sabitzer’s pass found the England international, who turned and managed to fire a shot at Karius’s goal but the German was forced to make a great save.

The attacks kept coming from Ten Hag’s men with Bruno Fernandes storming way with Rashford in a two-against-one break against Trippier. But the full-back was able to recover in time and make the block. Ten minutes later, Fernandes’s long ball picked out Rashford on the left wing and he exchanged passes with sub Jadon Sancho before allowing Wan-Bissaka to try a shot from distance, which was caught by Karius.

Jacob Murphy swerved a long-ranger narrowly off target and Joelinton forced De Gea to claw the ball away as time began to run out, but Fernandes really should have provided the icing on the cake when clean through, only for Karius to pull off a brilliant stop. It mattered little in the end, as the Reds were able to celebrate the final whistle on a joyous occasion at Wembley.
