50 PL opponents: Huddersfield to Leeds

Friday 23 June 2023 18:00

To mark Manchester United facing a 50th different club in the Premier League, following Luton Town's promotion, we're recalling our record against each one and showing the highlights from some classic meetings.

HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

Huddersfield have only ever spent two seasons in the Premier League, between 2017 and 2019. The Terriers shocked United on our trip to the John Smith's Stadium on 21 October 2017, when Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre put them two goals up in the first half. Marcus Rashford got one back in the second period, but it was David Wagner's men who took the three points. We have never beaten Huddersfield away from home in the Premier League, with our second and so far latest trip there resulting in a 1-1 draw on 5 May 2019 when Scott McTominay was our scorer. However, we have won both of our clashes with the Terriers at Old Trafford have been United wins, beating them 2-0 in February 2018 and then 3-1 on Boxing Day of that same year.

26 December 2018: Paul Pogba scored a brace as the Reds made it two wins from as many games under Solskjaer...

Classic match: United 3 Huddersfield 1 (2018/19)
Boxing Day 2018 saw the Terriers make the trip to Old Trafford, for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's second match as caretaker manager. Huddersfield were struggling in their second season in the Premier League and were looking to record a positive result to ensure they didn't get cut off at the bottom of the table. It wasn't to be for Wagner's team though, as Nemanja Matic opened the scoring from close range following a corner. Paul Pogba took the match into his hands in the second half, with two impressive finishes and, despite Mathias Jorgensen's late goal, it was merely a consolation for the visitors.

HULL CITY

United have faced Hull 10 times in the Premier League era and boast a fruitful record, winning seven consecutive top-flight clashes with the Tigers after they were first promoted in 2008. Since then, Hull have experienced a handful of relegations but they managed to hold United to a couple of 0-0 draws, in 2015 and 2017.

Classic match: United 4 Hull 0 (2009/10)
This match was a memorable one for Wayne Rooney, who scored every goal as the Reds ran riot without response. Rooney opened the scoring after just seven minutes, but had to wait until the latter stages for a late flourish that added gloss on his own performance and that of his team. He made it a brace in the 82nd minute, completed his hat-trick three minutes later, and then grabbed a fourth during injury time, sending Sir Alex Ferguson's team to the top of the Premier League table.

IPSWICH TOWN

Ipswich have not appeared in the Premier League since their relegation in 2002; prior to this, the Tractor Boys had spent five campaigns in the top flight, meeting United on 10 occasions. The Reds have won half of those meetings, losing twice and drawing three times. Ipswich had resided in League One from 2019 up until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Classic match: United 9 Ipswich 0 (1994/95)
When Ipswich visited Old Trafford in March 1995, the Reds set a new Premier League record for the biggest win recorded in the division, putting nine goals past George Burley's side. Andy Cole got on the scoresheet a remarkable five times, while the match was only the third occasion in United history that we put nine goals past an opponent (the other two were in 1895 and 1898). As well as Cole's five efforts, Mark Hughes grabbed a brace and Roy Keane and Paul Ince got in on the act too. This result was the last United would play against Ipswich in the top flight for five years, as the Blues dropped into the Championship at the end of this campaign and would not return until 2000.

LEEDS UNITED

An age-old rivalry, United v Leeds is a fixture that has produced some classics over the years. The Reds dominate the spoils in the Premier League with 17 wins compared to the Yorkshire club's four, across 30 meetings in the competition. As the last champions of the old First Division, Leeds were in the rebranded top flight at its inception in 1992 and remained there for over a decade, before being relegated to the Championship in 2004. There they would stay, and even drop into League One, before returning to the top table in 2020. However, after a three-year stay, the Elland Road outfit were relegated once more at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Classic match: United 6 Leeds 2 (2020/21)
This was the first Old Trafford clash between the clubs for 16 years. The previous top-flight meeting ended in a 1-1 draw, back in 2004, but the 2020 encounter was anything but close and cagey. Under the tutelage of innovative boss Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds adopted a 'gung-ho' approach to football and it created an enticing spectacle for neutrals - and on this occasion, a memorable win for the Reds, who raced into an early two-goal lead thanks to a Scott McTominay brace inside three minutes. It was 4-1 to the home side at half-time, after an electric first period in which Bruno Fernandes and Victor Lindelof also scored, and after the interval Daniel James and Bruno put it beyond any doubt. Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas were Leeds' scorers on that day, but the goals proved to be consolations, as our old rivals made a nighmare return to M16.
