McShane takes up Republic of Ireland Under-21s role

Manchester United Academy coach Paul McShane is set to join the Republic of Ireland Under-21s' backroom staff.

He will join Head Coach Jim Crawford as an Assistant Coach.

Paul, who will continue his role at United as lead coach of the Academy's Under-15s, has his UEFA A Licence and was accepted onto the Football Association of Ireland’s UEFA Pro Licence course earlier this year.

He will join up with the Ireland Under-21 players and staff ahead of next week's games against Turkey (Friday 8 September) and San Marino (Tuesday 12 September).

McShane re-joined United as a player-coach in 2021, and has gradually been gaining experience on the touchline.

The former United player fills the position vacated by fellow ex-Red John O'Shea, who is now part of the Irish senior team backroom staff.

Upon taking up this role, McShane said: "I can’t wait to get started with the Under-21s.

"I played for Ireland in the youth ranks from the age of 14 before going on to play senior level, so for me it is about passing on the experience I had as a player with the aim to help develop the next generation. I’m looking forward to it.

"I’m still learning as a coach and it has been a whirlwind few years since transitioning from player to coach but this is an unbelievable opportunity to coach with my country."

We wish you the best of luck in your new role, Paul!
