Harry Maguire in action at Old Trafford.

Ole's team news for Carabao Cup semi

Monday 06 January 2020 09:54

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided the latest on his squad ahead of Tuesday's Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against neighbours Manchester City.

The Reds made changes for the Emirates FA Cup stalemate at Wolves on Saturday but appeared to pick up fresh knocks to Harry Maguire and Tahith Chong.

With the fixture congestion continuing due to next week's still-to-be-confirmed replay date against the Black Country side at Old Trafford, it leaves Ole with food for thought ahead of the chance to stop City reaching a third successive final in the League Cup as United aim to progress to Wembley to take on Leicester City or Aston Villa.

After the first leg at home, the Reds will travel to the Etihad Stadium, the scene of a wonderful 2-1 win in the Premier League last month, on 29 January.

Anthony Martial will hope to return after being ill.

Jesse Lingard  and Anthony Martial sat out the Molineux clash due to illness, while Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay remain unavailable due to injury. The manager will give as much time as possible to Maguire and the others to prove their fitness in advance of Tuesday's 20:00 GMT kick-off against the Blues.

"It is a bit early yet [with Maguire]," Ole told MUTV.

"We are going to give him as much time as possible. He was hobbling about yesterday but there are still 36 hours to go, so we will just wait with all of them.

“It is not a time to go out on the pitch and do lots of work anyway. We are going to do meetings and recovery work.”

When asked specifically about Lingard and Martial, he replied: "We hope that everyone is going to be available but we don't know, because some recover quicker from illnesses than others. So it is the same answer. We have just got to give them as much time as possible and make a decision on the team in the morning."

Sergio Romero came in for David De Gea and kept another clean sheet, while Diogo Dalot was introduced as a substitute on Saturday for his first senior involvement since October's away game at Newcastle United.

Diogo Dalot made his senior comeback at Molineux on Saturday.

City shuffled their pack for a comfortable 4-1 FA Cup third-round home win over Port Vale at the weekend, with youngsters Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Phil Foden among the scorers.

Blues boss Pep Guardiola said: “We don’t have much time, but we have two-and-a-half days to train and prepare [for] the game we want to do.”

Aymeric Laporte is on his way back to full fitness, but this tie will probably come too soon for him, although fellow centre-back Nicolas Otamendi should be available. Leroy Sane remains sidelined.
