Herrera's message of support for friend De Gea

In times of need, you can count on your friends to back you up.

That’s exactly what has happened for David De Gea in light of Spain’s shock exit at the World Cup on Sunday, after the 2010 winners suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Russia at the last-16 stage.

The result has prompted criticism of the Spanish side in the homeland and, unfairly, part of that has reportedly been aimed in the direction of our four-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.

De Gea has since used his official Instagram account to post an upbeat message of defiance to his followers, which reads: “To whom supported, criticised us with respect and suffered with us, thanks. We'll get up again and never give up.”

United fans have naturally been quick to support David and Ander Herrera is among those who have commented on the post, urging his friend, team-mate and compatriot to focus on the future as a Red.

“Come quickly to Manchester United,” wrote Herrera. “We have big things to achieve ahead!”

Ander Herrera was quick to send a message to his friend David De Gea after Spain's World Cup exit.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DE GEA?

David is set to enjoy a well-earned holiday, following his exploits in the 2017/18 season and performances at Russia 2018. That suggests he may not board the plane on 15 July for the start of Tour 2018, presented by Aon, although the travelling squad is yet to be confirmed.

In previous years, it has been common for several players to join the group at a later date.
