Bruno Fernandes: It's about the team, not me

The Portuguese playmaker scored twice to help the Reds recover from an early deficit, meaning he now has 10 goals in 10 Premier League away games since signing in January.

He also laid on Edinson Cavani’s first strike for United to secure the points in injury-time but, when interviewed after the final whistle, our no.18 was keen to point out the contributions of all 14 players in claiming the three points.

“It was difficult but before the game we spoke and said we need to be positive,” Bruno told Stewart Gardner.

“It doesn’t matter what happens in the game, we need to be positive. Everyone was talking to each other today, we took [going behind] in a positive way.

“We scored a goal, did the right things and the result came.

“The intensity and right mindset was there. We scored the third goal because we believe and I think we defended really well today.

“Last goal if you see, H [Harry Maguire] doesn’t come out to do the tackle, I don’t come out with Edi [Cavani] to score the goal.

“So everyone needs to help. I think today was a team performance.”

Bruno’s emphasis on the team was also exemplified in his reaction to the suggestion Marcus Rashford might claim our second goal.

At first it appeared our no.10 had nodded United into the lead, but replays showed Fernandes’s cross went straight into the back of the net.

However, the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder said whether he scored or not didn’t matter and added that his primary responsibility was setting up the forwards, as he did for Cavani late on.

“[Marcus] tells me he didn’t get a touch but it doesn’t matter if he did or didn’t, I’m here to serve my strikers,” the 26-year-old continued.

“If I have a chance to score a goal of course I want to score it, but I’m here to serve my strikers, or Juan, or Paul or if Edi is there.

“If the goal is for him, it doesn’t matter, it’s no problem. It’s three points for us and the points are for everyone.

“I think strikers need to score and have the confidence. A striker is confident when he scores. For [Cavani] it’s really important.

“Everyone knows Edi is a striker who’s done everything in the world of football. He really helps a lot and it will be much better for him after this first goal.”
