Brilliant Bruno still tops the rankings

Bruno Fernandes continues to be rated as the best performer at the 2022 World Cup but he has been joined by another Manchester United team-mate in the top 10.

The midfielder was excellent again in Portugal's 6-1 demolition of Switzerland in the final round-of-16 fixture, notching an assist for Pepe's header and contributing to some excellent attacking work by Fernando Santos's men.

Stats site Whoscored.com use their data to calculate the top individuals at the tournament, and Bruno still sits proudly at the summit, by the slenderest of margins ahead of France forward Kylian Mbappe.

Diogo Dalot was impressive in defence and attack against shell-shocked Switzerland.

Bruno has two goals and three assists to his name and his output is one of the reasons why Portugal are now being talked up as serious contenders for the trophy, as they prepare to take on surprise package Morocco on Saturday afternoon (15:00 GMT).

Another United man shining for the team is right-back Diogo Dalot, who is fending off some pretty fierce competition to pin down a regular spot. The defender crossed for one of Goncalo Ramos's three goals to register his second assist of the finals, despite only appearing in two games in Qatar.

In addition to one vital clearance, it was the highlight of another smart display by the 23-year-old.

Whoscored.com's rankings, based on a minimum of two appearances in the tournament, rate Dalot as the 10th best performer overall, with Casemiro slipping to 14th, which is a little surprising after another excellent display by the midfielder in Brazil's emphatic 4-1 victory over South Korea.

With thoughts starting to turn to who gets their hands on the prized Golden Ball award, the bookmakers rate Mbappe as a short-priced favourite with Lionel Messi his closest challenger in the betting.
