Former Manchester United assistant manager Carlos Queiroz has been appointed as Ghana's new head coach.

The 73-year-old will come up against England, Croatia and Panama in Group L at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in North America.

Queiroz had two spells as Sir Alex Ferguson's number two, helping United regain the Premier League title in the 2002/03 season before taking charge of Real Madrid.

The Portuguese returned to Old Trafford a year later and played a key role in coaching the side that lifted the Champions League trophy in 2008.

Mikael Silvestre has revealed the plan behind an ‘electric’ night at Old Trafford from 2008.

Queiroz departed the Reds for good at the end of that campaign, to manage Portugal, whom he guided to the second round of the 2010 World Cup.

That was the first of what will be a joint-record five consecutive tournaments as a coach, with Queiroz in Iran's dugout at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions.

In a long career which dates back to the late 1980s, the globetrotting Queiroz has also coached the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Colombia, Egypt and Qatar.

He stepped down from his previous managerial job, with Oman, last month.

Queiroz managed Iran between 2011 and 2019, and returned to take charge at the 2022 World Cup.

"I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career," Queiroz said.

"Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future."

The Black Stars have qualified for the fifth time in six tournaments and are captained by Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew.
