Manchester United put Monday's home defeat to Leeds United behind us with a crucial three points at Champions League rivals Chelsea.
Shorn of a number of key defenders through injury and suspension, the patched-up backline held firm after Matheus Cunha’s goal just before half-time.
The win puts us 10 points clear of the Blues, and to within touching distance of securing a top five place, with two more wins now enough.
Bruno Fernandes’s 18th assist of the campaign means he is just two more away from matching Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, who jointly hold the single-season record.
It’s our eighth wins in their 12 Premier League games under Michael Carrick - and the latest success could be the most important.
FIRST HALF - NOSES IN FRONT
Defensive issues or not, United’s stance was to not sit back. Dominating the ball early on with Bruno Fernandes perfecting the press, the attacking line-up signalled our intent.
But the hosts, with ground to make up following three consecutive Premier League defeats, knew there was no time to lose.
Soon they began to flex their muscle and, moments after having a penalty appeal waved away when Cole Palmer fell under Ayden Heaven’s challenge, the Londoners almost broke through.
Estevao teased Luke Shaw on the right before unleashing a curling effort that missed Senne Lammens’s right-hand post by millimeters.
It was to be the lively Brazilian’s final act. Alejandro Garnacho was summoned following an injury to the teenager, and the reception from the two sets of supporters for the Argentina international was contrasting.
Chelsea then had the ball in the net when Liam Delap tapped in Palmer's square ball, but the England midfielder had strayed offside. Home impatience was growing, and that frustration soon got louder.
After running in behind and shaking aside the threat of Garnacho, captain Fernandes provided the perfect pass for Cunha, who lashed the ball home with a lethal finish.
Cunha, who has sweet memories of Stamford Bridge after his hat-trick there for Wolves in 2024, made sure we have now scored in 15 consecutive Premier League away games.
Bruno produced once again, registering his 18 assist of the campaign and he continues to chase down the league's single-season record of 20.
United now have five players in double digits for goal contributions this season, too.
Fernandes wasn’t content with just silver service. The captain looked to add to Chelsea's woes when his lung-busting run opened things up in front of him. Shooting firm and low, he only just failed to hit the target.
Chelsea, knowing how damaging a defeat would be to their top-five hopes, found some urgency. Delap hit Lammens’s crossbar when his powerful header met Pedro Neto’s centre.
United wanted things wrapped up. Another Bruno burst after solid Benjamin Sesko hold-up play wasn’t rewarded, but his deflected pass almost went in anyway as Robert Sanchez was forced to scramble.
There was work still to do. A United head got on the end of another wicked Neto delivery, the bar again coming to the Reds’ rescue as our much-changed backline remained unbreached. Mazraoui, stepping in at centre-half superbly, deflected the ball onto the woodwork.
Mason Mount, returning to his former club, and Amad were both introduced as Carrick attempted to interrupt the rhythm the Blues were beginning to find.
Time was running out and a shot from range from Moises Caicedo was the best the hosts could muster as the home supporters headed for the exits, with the result soon to be confirmed.
United now need just six more points enough to confirm a return to the Champions League.
