Erik ten Hag

Confirmed: United's team to face Tottenham

Sunday 14 January 2024 15:30

Erik ten Hag has made one change to his Manchester United side, for Sunday's Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur (16:30 GMT kick-off).

The Reds beat League One side Wigan Athletic 2-0 in the Emirates FA Cup on Monday, but this is our first game of the year in the top flight.

Christian Eriksen, who was ill for the trip to the DW Stadium, replaces Scott McTominay in the line-up.

“He can give the pass, he is a smart player,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports.

“He can make the difference, he scans for those passes and he can give them. He has that ability that not many players have.”

Which Reds can you spot entering Old Trafford ahead of today's crunch clash against Tottenham?

McTominay takes a place on the bench, alongside Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, who are returning to the matchday squad following long absences.

Casemiro hasn't played since the Carabao Cup meeting with Newcastle United on 1 November. Martinez, meanwhile, has been absent for almost four months - our 4-3 defeat to Bayern Munich on 20 September was his last outing.

Antony also returns, as a substitute, after illness, but Luke Shaw wasn't quite ready after his own recent absence.

“It’s good that players are returning, we hoped to have Luke Shaw today but in the last minute he dropped out,” Ten Hag added, to MUTV.

“At the end of the day, no matter who is coming in we have to win.

“I think both managers are proactive, dynamic so it could be [a great game], but we have to defend very well to avoid conceding chances. I think when we do it well in attacking transition, in our possession game we can take some benefits, take some joy from it.”

Timo Werner makes his debut for the visitors, having signed on loan earlier this week, while new boy Radu Dragusin is on the bench. Cristiano Romero and Micky van de Ven return to the XI after injury.
