Confirmed: United XI to face Granada

Thursday 15 April 2021 18:45

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made five changes to his Manchester United side that beat Spurs last weekend for the visit of Granada for the second leg of the Europa League quarter final tie at Old Trafford tonight.

The Reds have a healthy 2-0 lead from the first leg in Spain last Thursday night and the boss has freshened up his XI.

David De Gea is back in goal after keeping a clean sheet in the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes a week ago.

De Gea is one of three changes in the defence - Axel Tuanzebe partners Victor Lindelof in the absence of captain Harry Maguire, who is suspended. Meanwhile, Paul Pogba wears the armband with Maguire out.

Luke Shaw is also banned for the visit of Granada and his place at left-back is taken by Alex Telles.

Will Fish is the latest Academy product to be promoted to our Europa League B list.

Nemanja Matic comes in as an anchor man in our midfield, with Scott McTominay missing out as he has also picked up a suspension in Spain.

Mason Greenwood, who came on for Marcus Rashford at Spurs on Sunday, starts in attack in place of our no.10 who is on the bench nursing a slight knock.

United have two goalkeepers on the bench with Lee Grant joining Dean Henderson and there is a first appearance on senior duty for 18-year-old Manchester-born central defender Will Fish.

Anthony Elanga is also on an 11-man bench after he was an unused sub for the Granada trip last week.

Discussing his line-up, Ole told MUTV: “It’s a knockout tie. We’ve got a healthy lead from the first game but you don’t take any chances.

"You have some niggly injuries or soreness - Marcus’s foot, so that was any easy one to leave him out. Apart from that, the players are in form, they want to play and they just look forward to the next game. With the three enforced changes we stuck with what we felt was a strong team.

"We want to go out there dominate possession, create chances and score goals. We need to improve as a team. We need to be better as a team if we want to win this tournament and it’s another chance to build momentum.”

Asked about Pogba taking the armband in the absence of Maguire, Ole added: "He's an off-the-field leader as well. Paul is a big character within the group. We’ve got loads of leaders, loads have worn the armband. Of course, Harry is the one normally, but we’ve got a group of very, very experienced players.”
