Confirmed: United XI to face Magpies

Monday 27 December 2021 19:00

Ralf Rangnick has named his Manchester United starting XI to face Newcastle United at St James' Park.

The Reds are back in action after the Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion games were postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the camp.

Thankfully, tonight's 20:00 GMT kick-off goes ahead and is the final fixture of this Premier League round 19, following the six games that took place on Boxing Day.

The big news is Raphael Varane returns in defence after being out since the 2-2 draw at Atalanta in the Champions League, in early November.

The Frenchman partners captain Harry Maguire with Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly not in the matchday squad.

Mason Greenwood is also recalled to the starting line-up, in place of Jadon Sancho, while full-backs Diogo Dalot and Alex Telles retain their spots, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw on the bench.

Edinson Cavani is among the substitutes, following his recent injury lay-off.

United: De Gea; Dalot, Varane, Maguire (c), Telles; Fred, McTominay; Fernandes, Greenwood; Rashford, Ronaldo.

Subs: Henderson, Jones, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Matic, van de Beek, Elanga, Cavani, Sancho.
