Season recap: Manchester United 4 Chelsea 0

Sunday 07 June 2020 14:00

We're marking 12 days until Manchester United's season resumes by recalling the Reds' 12 Premier League victories so far, starting with our opening weekend triumph over Chelsea…

MATCH REPORT

Manchester United produced one of the best performances of recent times at Old Trafford with a 4-0 opening-day demolition of Chelsea in Frank Lampard's first match in charge of the visitors.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's line-up had the youngest average age (24 years 227 days) of any named over the course of the opening Premier League round of fixtures, and was the youngest the club had named since the final-day win over Crystal Palace in 2017.

Yet the rampant Reds were still able to start the campaign off with a resounding win, thanks to a double by Marcus Rashford, including one from the penalty spot, and other goals by Anthony Martial and debutant Daniel James. Read our full report here.

It’s exactly a year since our superb opening-day victory over Chelsea, with debuts for Maguire, Wan-Bissaka and James...

KEY QUOTES

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “Of course, [with] Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] and Harry [Maguire], we’ve kept a clean sheet, they’ve come into the team and squad and they’ve lifted everyone, they’ve challenged the other boys because there is competition for places now. I’m sure [Daniel James] will remember that for his whole life. He’s had a tough summer with his personal life as well and to start his career like this, I'm so pleased for him.”

Andreas Pereira: “It was great. It was very satisfying that we won at home for the fans against a big club like Chelsea and I’m very happy about the win. It was hard work, especially in the first half, as it was a bit nervy. We couldn’t get though them but, in the second half, we got the chances and we scored against them.”
