David Beckham has been knighted in the King's Birthday Honours list.

All of us at Manchester United offer our warm congratulations to David on this richly-deserved honour.

In the three-and-a-half decades since he joined our Academy as a 14-year-old, David has established himself as not only an indelible legend of this football club, but as a wonderful ambassador for the English game as a whole.

David, we salute your achievements and thank you for your tremendous contribution to Manchester United.

Beckham was a key member of our Treble-winning side, earning the Man-of-the-Match award in the dramatic Champions League final win over Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp.

In total, he made 394 appearances for the club, scoring 85 goals, and was adored by the supporters for his combination of tenacity and exceptional technique.

After leaving for Real Madrid in 2003, he also went on to play for LA Galaxy, Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

Away from football, Becks has also been recognised for his contributions to British society, including his charity work.

The 50-year-old was influential in helping London win the race to host the 2012 Olympics and has been a UNICEF ambassador since 2005.

"I'm so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I'm grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment," he said.

He was awarded an OBE in 2003 and now follows in the footsteps of the man he was named after (one of his middle names is Robert) - another United legend in the late Sir Bobby Charlton.

Congratulations again Sir David, from all at the club!

And well done too to famous Reds fans Gary Oldman and Luke Littler, with the esteemed actor knighted and darts superstar receiving an MBE.
