De Gea: Carrick’s doing an amazing job

Former United goalkeeper David De Gea says Michael Carrick is doing an amazing job at Old Trafford and hopes his former-team-mate can take the Reds back into the UEFA Champions League.

Carrick and De Gea are good pals after sharing the pitch 186 times together during their respective United careers, and the Spaniard has been keeping an eye on the former’s progress since he was appointed our head coach in January.

David also knows what it is like to play for Michael, having been our man between the sticks for the three games the boss took caretaker charge of in 2021.

“He’s doing unbelievable. He’s a great guy, he knows how the players feel so it’s easy to talk with him,” David said, when asked by TNT Sports about Carrick and United, while back in England with current club Fiorentina on Thursday night.

"He's doing an amazing job.

“United are winning a lot of games now, playing well. Hopefully, they can get the Champions League spot and keep growing.

“Let’s see United again in the high positions and fighting for trophies.”

De Gea and Fiorentina were in London to take on Crystal Palace in the quarter-final first leg of their UEFA Conference League tie, which the Eagles won 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

Jean-Philippe Mateta opened the scoring from the penalty spot and our former goalkeeper made a good save to deny him a second goal shortly after, but the rebound was turned home by Tyrick Mitchell.

Ismaila Sarr stretched the Premier League outfit's advantage to three late on, but David and his team-mates still have a chance to try to somehow turn the two-legged encounter around, with the teams due to face one another again in Florence next Thursday.

That could mean another meeting with old colleague Dean Henderson, as the two ex-United shot-stoppers are skippers of the respective clubs and wore the armbands in the first leg.

It’s De Gea’s second season with the Italian side, you may remember he returned to Old Trafford with them, for a friendly before the start of this campaign.

The 35-year-old left United at the end of the 2022/23 term with our club records for both appearances (545) and clean sheets (190) as a goalkeeper, after a legendary 12-year stint, in which he won the Premier League, Emirates FA Cup, UEFA Europa League and two League Cups.

Our four-time Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year winner told us earlier this season that he would be cheering the club on from afar, and he will hope to see the Reds qualify for the Champions League over the coming weeks, while continuing Fiorentina's European adventure of their own this term for at least one more game.

United now know that finishing in the top five of the Premier League will secure our berth for the 2026/27 campaign, and the pursuit of that goal continues when we return to top-flight action by hosting Leeds United on Monday evening.
