De Gea is United's Player of the Month for February

Friday 02 March 2018 09:55

David De Gea has been voted Manchester United’s Player of the Month for February by supporters.

As always, fans voted in their thousands in the poll that was conducted on our official Twitter account @ManUtd, and De Gea picked up 60 per cent of the final total. Fellow nominees Scott McTominay (21 per cent) and Romelu Lukaku (19 per cent) finished second and third, respectively.

It's the first time that United's no.1 has won the star man award this season, although he was nominated in October.

WHY HAS DAVID WON IT?

De Gea was in sensational form between the sticks throughout the month of February and proved once again why many feel he is the best in world football.

His standout performance undoubtedly came in his homeland of Spain, when he ensured the Reds’ UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg at Sevilla remained goalless heading into the second leg with a series of stunning stops – including one truly world-class save to keep out Luis Muriel’s close-range header.

You can watch his epic performance against Sevilla in the video below...

When De Gea stopped Sevilla

Back in 2018, David produced a goalkeeping masterclass against Sevilla in our Champions League last-16 first leg...

That 0-0 draw in Spain was one of two clean sheets that De Gea kept in his four appearances across the month of February – having also shut out Huddersfield Town during the 2-0 Premier League win at Old Trafford. He was notably rested for the Emirates FA Cup victory over the same opponents at the John Smith’s Stadium.

De Gea conceded just twice in his 378 minutes of action – to Matt Ritchie in the Reds’ 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United and Willian in the 2-1 win over Chelsea last weekend.

Our Spanish stopper has kept 19 clean sheets in 34 games across all competitions this term and leads the race for this season’s Golden Glove, the award for the goalkeeper with the most Premier League clean sheets, with 15 shut-outs.

With 10 top-flight matches left to play, De Gea is two ahead of Chelsea’s Thibault Courtois and has three more clean sheets than Tottenham stopper Hugo Lloris in third place.

De Gea could also be a key figure for the Reds during a crucial run of games in March

HIGH PRAISE FOR OUR NUMBER ONE

Jose Mourinho has long been an admirer of De Gea’s and feels he’s in the right place to continue achieving success in his career.

The Reds manager told the 27-year-old after his Man-of-the-Match display in December’s 3-1 win at Arsenal that his impressive performance proved he’s the best goalkeeper in the world, while just last month, he spoke of his eagerness to tie down the ever-popular stopper for the long term.

“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper and it’s not possible for a team to be successful without a fantastic goalkeeper,” said Mourinho after the goalless draw against Sevilla.

WHERE DO YOU STAND ON DE GEA V SCHMEICHEL?

ManUtd.com’s Adam Marshall feels De Gea has now usurped Peter Schmeichel as United’s greatest-ever goalkeeper, following his irrepressible display in Seville which was the latest in a string of outstanding performances since he arrived at the club from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
