Early team news for Reds v Blades at Old Trafford

“Marcus felt his knee but we'll have to do a scan,” manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed. “Hopefully, it's not too bad but we'll see tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, Eric Bailly should be an option for one of the centre-back slots after missing the FA Cup tie.

“Eric will be available,” explained the boss. “It was just a little thing and I didn’t want to risk him, Victor [Lindelof] was ready, and we had cover on bench. He’s fine, no problem. I can’t say if he’s playing but he’ll be fit and available for selection for Wednesday.”

Bruno Fernandes came off the bench to score a superb free-kick winner and the competition for places remains fierce, while Ole is carefully managing the minutes of his squad with the schedule so unrelenting. Anthony Martial also only played the final stages of the triumph, which sets up a fifth-round date with West Ham United at Old Trafford.

"There was a great atmosphere in our dressing room," revealed the manager, "but now I want to see the reaction, how we can now mentally go again, against Sheffield United. That’s the challenge now.

"We have beaten Liverpool, and everyone is elated, very happy and they should be, but tomorrow morning I want to see players thinking about Wednesday night, not what happened today.”

Edinson Cavani came agonisingly close to his first goal at the Theatre of Dreams when he headed against an upright, and could lead the line again while Fred's energy may see him drafted into midfield, with Nemanja Matic also an option for a recall.

Academy graduate Dean Henderson kept goal against Liverpool and he also played in the away game against Sheffield United, the South Yorkshire club where he spent two successful seasons on loan, but David De Gea may return in midweek.

When asked if Jesse Lingard could be leaving on loan ahead of the transfer deadline on 1 February, Ole suggested the midfielder was close to being involved on Sunday.

“He trained this morning but wasn't in the squad,” said the manager, in his post-match media briefing. “He wants to play football. We will have to see and sit down with Jesse and make a decision on what are are going to do.

“He's been an ultimate professional and trained well this morning, with a small group who were not in the squad.

“I will sit down and speak with him again and see if anything comes up. I'm happy to have him in and around us as I know he could have come in today and done well.”

SHEFFIELD UNITED'S TEAM NEWS

The visitors will be without suspended defender John Egan and a recent setback for Jack O'Connell in his comeback from a knee problem would suggest he is also out.

Ben Osborn and Oli McBurnie missed the Blades' FA Cup win over Plymouth Argyle, while Sander Berge is sidelined with a thigh injury.

Lys Mousset and Jack Robinson will hope to feature and there were no fresh concerns from Saturday's tie, with manager Chris Wilder confirming: “Everyone came through okay, so that’s good news. There’s nothing new to report on that count, which is pleasing because we’ve got enough out already as it is.”
