Edinson Cavani

Maguire: Cavani will score plenty for us

Harry Maguire believes we’ll see Edinson Cavani’s name on the scoresheet plenty more times this season, after the Uruguayan bagged his first in a red shirt on Saturday.

The former Paris Saint-Germain hitman came on for the last knockings of the 3-1 win at Goodison Park, taking his total involvement for United to 100 minutes across five games, all as substitute.

The 33-year-old – who had a claim for a penalty turned down by referee Paul Tierney – kept himself onside in injury time to latch on to Bruno Fernandes’s through ball and finish off the Toffees – and Maguire appreciated our no.7’s contribution off the bench.

“It’s great to see Cavani come on,” said the skipper.

See what the skipper had to say about fixture congestion, Cavani, Fernandes and Pickford after Saturday’s big win…

“He worked tirelessly up there and did the dirty work and he got his rewards right at the end. I think he's going to be a big player for us, he’s going to score goals.

“He knows where the back of the net is and I’ve seen that in training a few times already. He’s just getting up to speed in terms of his training and workrate but he’s going to be a big player for us.”

Maguire was also asked who he thought had scored the second goal, which was originally awarded to Marcus Rashford before replays showed that Fernandes’s cross had gone straight into the back of the net.

The Portuguese’s productive performance, during which he scored the 100th and 101st goals of his club career, was enough to see him crowned Man of the Match by users in our Official App.

Harry also praised the mental characteristics of the 26-year-old’s game, saying he’d led by example in helping the Reds recover from Wednesday’s surprise defeat in Istanbul.

“I haven’t seen it [the second goal] back, but Bruno was excellent.

“He came under a little bit of stick on Wednesday night but he’s a big character and a big leader. He’s reacted brilliantly and does his talking on the pitch.

“I’m delighted he’s got a couple of goals or whatever you want to call it, a goal or an assist.”
