Ten Hag explains team to face Sevilla

Thursday 13 April 2023 19:55

Erik ten Hag has talked through his Manchester United side after making three changes for the first leg against Sevilla in the Europa League this evening.

Anthony Martial comes in to lead the line for the Reds in attack at Old Trafford, replacing the injured Marcus Rashford after he was injured during our 2-0 success over Everton on Saturday.

Casemiro and Raphael Varane also both returning to the starting XI for the visit of the Andalusians in M16, with the pair replacing Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire.

Christian Eriksen - who returned to action as a substitute against the Toffees - is again on the bench, whilst young Academy goalkeeper Radek Vitek is also named in our matchday squad, for the second time this season.

Ten Hag: It's a boost to have them back

Erik ten Hag comments on the return of Casemiro, Eriksen and Martial at a vital stage of the season...

With Martial given the nod from the start this evening at the Theatre of Dreams, Ten Hag stated via BT Sport: “I think he is ready. He is ready to play.

''He has had three games to come in. He has been playing really carefully. I think he could have started against Everton. So now, Rashford is injured and it is logical he plays in the team.

''I now hope for him that he stays fit. That he gets some games in a row, because I think that he needs that for his confidence.

''He will score, he will link up, he will also do a good job at pressing, which is positive for us. But yeah, he needs to keep fit because when he is fit, he is massive for us.''
Eriksen could again feature from the bench this evening, following his recent reintroduction to first-team action, with the boss adding: “I think he [Eriksen] is ready as well.

''But also, I want to do it very carefully and I have to tell you the midfield played really well against Brentford and Everton.

''So it is not necessary to change the lot. So Scott dropped out with an injury. But Casemiro needs the minutes after some games out, so I think it is logical to play this midfield.''
