Erik ten Hag has explained his Manchester United selection choices for the Premier League game at Aston Villa.

The boss has opted to replace suspended midfielder Bruno Fernandes with Marcus Rashford, with Donny van de Beek and Alejandro Garnacho keeping their places in the side, following the 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

It means a first start in the division for 18-year-old winger Garnacho, who scored the only goal in Spain, and van de Beek's first place in a Premier League XI for the club since the final day of the 2020/21 season at Wolves.

Erik ten Hag goes into depth over why Cristiano Ronaldo gets the nod to skipper the Reds.

When asked by MUTV's Stewart Gardner if his team was a show of faith in van de Beek and Garnacho, the boss replied: "I think so. Alejandro did really well in two games in the Europa League.

"Now he deserves his position in the Premier League. I'm really curious what will come out and have faith in that. Let's wait and see how he will do."

Anthony Martial is back in the matchday squad after suffering an injury in the win at Everton.

Shola Shoretire is on the bench and hoping for a first outing in the Premier League since appearing as a substitute on the final day of last season, at Crystal Palace.
