Ten Hag assesses Sancho's season

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Jadon Sancho is a player that has made good progress across our 2022/23 campaign.

Sancho looked full of confidence during an impressive performance in Thursday’s 4-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Our no.25 started the encounter on the left flank, but following the injury to Antony, he switched to the right side. From there, he set up Anthony Martial’s goal that made it 2-0.

That involvement was among the highlights of a free-flowing display from the silk-footed attacker, who Erik believes has kicked on over the course of the season.

"He did very well on the right side, and I think he played a very good game,” the boss said, during his press conference to preview Sunday’s game against Fulham.

“I think Jadon Sancho was one of the players who [has made good] progress in this season. And there were many players in our squad who made good progress.

“I think it's a good base to build further on."
With the concluding league game at home to Fulham and the Emirates FA Cup final still to come, Jadon has made 39 appearances across his sophomore year at United.

The 23-year-old missed a chunk of the mid-season fixtures due to fitness struggles, but his quality has never been far from the surface eiher side of that period, and Ten Hag has regularly spoken about the attacker’s contributions on the pitch in high regard.

Sancho has also further demonstrated his versatility throughout the campaign, playing on both the left and right flanks, as well as in central attacking midfield areas on occasion.

It’s something that will no doubt be of value to Erik going forward as Jadon continues to develop, but which position does the boss regard as our no.25’s most comfortable?

"He can do both [wings], but I think he prefers to play on the left,” Ten Hag responded, when asked which flank he thinks is Sancho’s favourite.

“But we have seen [that] he is very good on the right as well."
