Ten Hag: We must all live by the highest standards

A passionate Erik ten Hag has underlined the message that his Manchester United players must live by the highest standards every day to match the group’s huge ambition.

The manager is happy with the progress that his squad has made this season and he points to the win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford as our best of the campaign so far.

However, the boss is far from satisfied and is confident that further progress can be made in the second half of 2022/23, if the Reds can maintain high levels of discipline.

In part two of our big interview in Spain, when asked if that is a message he is sending alongside his coaching staff, Erik says: “We have to because we have huge ambition and if you have, you have to follow the highest standards and you have to live them every day.

“That is the only way to get better and to get improvement in. As I said, I’m happy with where we are now, but I also see in football a lot of elements for improvement.”

The boss discusses the season so far, transfer signings, Cristiano Ronaldo and the future in part two of our Q&A...

Ten Hag is still moulding the squad in his own image and, of course, a massive part of that is by signing new players with the right characteristics and personality traits.

It is fair to say the manager’s five permanent signings - Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Antony – have all had a positive impact at the club so far.

When looking at potential transfer, Erik stresses that he studies the mentality as much as the player on the pitch:

“Yes, we looked and with football players clearly that is the first thing, the capabilities a player has. The human being behind [that] is also an important factor.

“But you can’t underestimate that. You need the right characters in your dressing room, not only if you want to win a game but if you want to win trophies.”
