FA Youth Cup to resume in March

Friday 26 February 2021 17:00

Manchester United's FA Youth Cup trail is set to get under way in March after a delayed start to our participation in the competition.

The Reds were due to play our third-round tie away at Salford City when the Football Association decided to suspend the tournament due to ongoing issues arising from the national lockdown.

Thankfully, the good news is that the prestigious trophy remains up for grabs as it is due to be completed in 2020/21, unlike the UEFA Youth League which was scrapped.

The 12 outstanding matches in the third round should be played by Saturday 20 March.

The fourth-round ties will follow before Saturday 3 April, with the reward at stake for Salford or United a home game against Liverpool or non-league Sutton United.

The fifth round (by 17 April), quarter-finals (by 1 May) and semi-finals (by 15 May) will be resolved before the final is due to be played before Saturday 29 May.

The FA have made it clear that should additional disruption take place in the future, a further review of the competition will be required at that stage.

United reached the semi-finals last year, before losing 1-0 to Chelsea, and last lifted the trophy in 2011.

The young Reds play Derby County on Saturday, while the Under-23s are at Southampton with both games live on MUTV.
