Pellistri: My favourite World Cup game

Thursday 01 December 2022 11:03

Manchester United winger Facundo Pellistri is currently representing Uruguay at his first-ever World Cup.

The 20-year-old started his nation's Group H opener in Qatar against South Korea, and made a substitute appearance in La Celeste’s last match against Portugal.

Unfortunately for Pellistri, Uruguay fell to a 2-0 loss against the Selecao, courtesy of a brace from his United team-mate Bruno Fernandes.

Qatar 2022 will undoubtedly be a memorable tournament for the Reds youngster, but one other iteration of the iconic competition already holds a special place in his mind.

Facundo Pellistri assesses Uruguay's chances at Qatar 2022 and the prospect of making his World Cup debut...

The 2014 World Cup in Brazil saw Uruguay come up against England in the group stage, and a 12-year-old Pellistri was in the crowd with his father.

“Once I went to see a match that was against England, when Suarez scored the two goals,” Facundo said in an interview with club media, when asked whether he had ever attended the competition as a fan.

“It was incredible. I was in the crowd, I was very young, with my dad and it is a memory I remember today.”

The winger continued, explaining how the celebrations in the crowd were unlike any he had ever experienced.

“I think all the matches of a World Cup are incredible. Any atmosphere of the World Cup is incredible, but that one in particular was so crazy because also Suarez came [back] from an injury and we didn’t know if he was going to play.

“But finally, he played, [he] scored two goals and it was unbelievable.”

Facundo will be hoping for similar scenes when La Celeste face Ghana on Friday (15:00 GMT), knowing that nothing less than a win will give them a chance of progressing to the last 16.
