Amrabat completes move to Fenerbahce

Saturday 31 August 2024 12:25

Former Manchester United loanee Sofyan Amrabat has completed a move to Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

The Moroccan international spent the majority of last season with the Reds, after joining from Fiorentina on the final day of the 2023 summer transfer window.

At the conclusion of his loan, he returned to Florence, and even began the 2024/25 season with La Viola, playing the entirety of their opening two Serie A fixtures.

But then came confirmation that Fiorentina and Fenerbahce had agreed a deal for the midfielder, which means he will join up with ex-United manager Jose Mourinho (plus beloved former midfielder Fred) in Istanbul.

The trio are set to face United very soon, too, after we were paired with Fenerbahce in Friday's UEFA Europa League draw.

Sofyan made 30 appearances across all competitions during his stay at Old Trafford, and became the first Moroccan to play for the club when he made his debut against Burnley in the Premier League.

Days later he was afforded his first start, in the League Cup against Crystal Palace. Amrabat showed his versatility and team-focused attitude by playing the first 45 minutes at left-back, before moving into midfield at the start of the second half.

Fans were clearly impressed, as the then 27-year-old finished third in our Man of the Match poll, behind only goalscorers Casemiro and Alejandro Garnacho.
Further starting opportunities were limited for much of the campaign, but Amrabat grew in importance during the final weeks of 2023/24.

He began each of our final four games and visibly grew in confidence, adding energy and industry to the midfield area, and offering admirable protection the defence.

A magnificent saving run-and-block to deny Newcastle's Alexander Isak, in our final home game, was a notable personal highlight.
Sofyan's Wembley heroics mean he will go down in United folklore as something of a cult hero.
But Sofyan undeniably saved his best for last.

Chosen to start the FA Cup final against Manchester City, he delivered a performance of towering strength and concentration, as the Reds beat our local rivals 2-1.

It was a pivotal individual display in a superb collective showing, and will never be forgotten by Manchester United fans.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Sofyan for his contribution to the club last term, and wish him all the best for the future.
