Fred and Brazil beaten in Copa America final

Sunday 11 July 2021 09:19

Brazil's run to the 2021 Copa America final ended in heartbreak for Manchester United midfielder Fred, as Argentina finally overcame their trophy hoodoo to win a first major title since 1993.

For Argentina, it was a moment of jubilation but particularly of relief for the squad's older members who have endured final defeat three times in the last decade.

Former Reds winger Angel di Maria delicately lobbed Ederson midway into the first half to put La Albiceleste ahead and in a commanding position.

Di Maria scores the decisive goal in the 22nd minute.

It would prove the only goal of the game, leaving Argentina as champions despite a surprising miss from Messi when one-on-one with the Brazil goalkeeper.

Having conceded in the first half, Brazil sought to find something different and so Fred, after a fine tournament in which he has proved crucial to the Seleção, was replaced by Roberto Firmino at half-time.

The 1-0 defeat was a disappointment for Fred and for many United fans who were cheering our midfielder on in his attempt to lift a major trophy in this enormously important weekend for international football.

Commiserations to our no.17.
