Goal of the Day: Berbatov’s five-star show

Wednesday 27 November 2019 07:00

Date: 27 November 2010, Old Trafford, Premier League

Background: United were anticipating a tricky encounter against Sam Allardyce’s doughty Blackburn side, while Sir Alex and co knew a win would send us clear at the top of the table for the first time in the 2010/11 season. It took just two minutes for the Reds to grab the lead and we were three ahead inside 23 minutes, with Dimitar Berbatov helping himself to two of those.
The goal: Two minutes after the break, Berba bagged his second hat-trick of the season with a goal he had started himself in his own half, with a backheel to Patrice Evra, before receiving the ball back and delivering a perfect pass to Nani. The winger, who tormented the Rovers defence all afternoon, then slid it back to Berba and he rounded the move off by sweeping the ball into the net. Glorious from start to finish.
What happened next: Blackburn were well and truly shellshocked by this point and Berbatov weighed in with another two goals in the 7-1 win, showing absolutely no mercy. His five-goal haul is only matched in United colours in the Premier League era by Andy Cole, against Ipswich Town in March 1995.

Reaction: Sir Alex hailed Berba’s goal haul as ‘a fantastic achievement’, while the man himself said: “I can't believe I scored five in a game, but it happened. I have scored that many before but it was a long time ago, back home in Bulgaria. As a striker, people do tend only to look at the goals you score. I am more concerned with how I play but today was all about goals for me."
