How United's festive fixture schedule looks

Wednesday 14 December 2022 13:57

The Christmas and new year period is always a hectic one for Manchester United, and 2022 is no different, as we prepare to return to action following the World Cup break.

While things begin again in earnest with the visit of Burnley in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday 21 December, there is then a six-day pause, as our traditional Boxing Day fixture has been moved to 24 hours later.

Nottingham Forest visit Old Trafford for the first time since 1998, almost exactly 24 years to the day, as they were beaten 3-0 during the Treble-winning campaign, thanks to goals from Ronny Johnsen (2) and Ryan Giggs.

The following weekend, we travel to Wolves for an early kick-off at Molineux on New Year's Eve, bidding to end 2022 on a high, against Julen Lopetugui's men.

The first part of 2023 is a very busy one for Erik ten Hag's team, as we have two games in a short space of time. Our opening outing of the year is a Tuesday night contest with Bournemouth at Old Trafford, a first meeting with the Cherries since they regained a top-flight place earlier this year.

Although the Emirates FA Cup third round takes place across the weekend, our tie with Everton has been moved to the Friday evening, to accommodate live television coverage in the UK on ITV and STV. It means four of our five festive fixtures are being staged at night.

The match-up with the Merseysiders represents a first foray into the famous competition for Ten Hag, and it is the opening game of the round, so hopefully we can get ourselves into the hat early.

Replays are in force again in 2022/23, for the third and fourth rounds of the tournament.
