Ladd: Our appetite is so strong

Saturday 14 October 2023 12:33

Hayley Ladd is looking to build on a promising start to the campaign for Manchester United Women, as she outlined the hunger and desire within the group to register a first win of the season on home soil.

The Reds are unbeaten in their opening three matches of 2023/24 – kicking off the campaign with a dramatic away win at Aston Villa, before successive draws at Leigh Sports Village against Arsenal in the WSL, and with PSG in the Champions League last time out.

Next up comes the visit of current league leaders Leicester City on Sunday, and while Ladd knows the Foxes will pose a difficult test, she feels confident that United can enter the game encouraged by our productive start to the season.

“I think it's been really positive,” said the Wales international, in an interview with club media.

Ladd: Everyone is hungry for the next game

United Women midfielder Hayley Ladd reflects on our start to the season, ahead of Sunday's test against Leicester...

“I think we'll be pleased with the results, obviously the Arsenal game the way it finished was a little bit painful, but we still got a draw and I think that's a really pleasing result given that they are a top side.

“[We’re] just really hungry for the next game, that appetite within the team is so strong at the moment. We knew going into this season that the league is changing so much. Each team is investing and changing so much.

“Every game is unpredictable and every team that we face is going to be a really strong one. We're really excited for the next game and to get going in terms of our league form.”

A host of new faces have joined the Reds squad this summer and their impact has been evident – including Melvine Malard scoring two in two, Geyse Fereira impressing off the bench in midweek, and Gabby George starting all three games so far.

Ladd added: “They've been amazing, I think the personalities, they fitted in so well, which is really nice.

“Just out on the pitch as well you can see the qualities that they all bring. It's really exciting to have all those new people come in and add something different.”

Our fans have been key in helping United gain positive results against experienced opposition in our two home games thus far – with a record crowd roaring us on against Arsenal, while there was another special atmosphere for our historic clash with PSG.

“Unbelievable,” Ladd continued, describing our supporters’ presence at Leigh Sports Village. “I think every game, they turn out and you can hear them, two-three hours before the game as well.

“The atmosphere they create is second-to-none. Especially on Friday night against Arsenal, you could hear them all the way through the game, and it made it such a great spectacle having that atmosphere from the fans and the supporters. A special shout out to them on matchday.”
