United fans at Munich memorial

How Munich will be remembered

Friday 31 January 2020 18:04

Before Saturday’s Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Old Trafford will commemorate the Munich Air Disaster, the darkest day in the history of Manchester United.

Prior to this weekend’s match, the annual service, led by fan group Munich 58, will take place beneath the Munich Memorial Clock at 15:30 GMT.

Rev. John Boyers will be leading poems, songs and prayers for the 23 people who suffered fatal injuries in the 1958 plane crash.

Players will wear black armbands to mark the occasion during the game and the families of those lost at Munich will be hosted as guests of the club.

A surfer flag paying respect to the Munich Air Disaster flies across the Stretford End.

Meanwhile, inside the stadium, there will be the traditional rendition of the Flowers of Manchester before kick-off.

Commemorative messages will also be shown across the digiboards surrounding the pitch.
