Preview: United Women v Everton

Tuesday 06 December 2022 17:21

Manchester United Women are back in action on Wednesday evening with a Continental Tyres League Cup Group A fixture at home to Everton.

Just four days on from that magnificent 5-0 victory over Aston Villa in front of more than 30,000 supporters at Old Trafford, an important cup tie awaits Marc Skinner’s Reds.

It’s our penultimate outing of the group stage, and with elimination from the competition a possibility, a key evening of football awaits under the lights at Leigh Sports Village.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of the game – from ticket information to team news and more…

HOW TO WATCH AND FOLLOW

Tickets for the 19:00 GMT kick-off are available to purchase online here. Information for coach travel from Old Trafford to Leigh Sports Village can also be found here.

Supporters will also be able to watch the match live via The FA Player.

THE OPPOSITION

The Toffees come into Wednesday’s contest ahead of United in Group A, having picked up five points from their opening two matches in this season’s competition. Under new manager Brian Sorensen, who joined the club in the summer, Everton secured three wins in their first five WSL games but four defeats in their last five league outings means their Conti Cup form has been the highlight of recent weeks. The Merseysiders drew with Aston Villa before winning on penalties to pick up an extra point, prior to a 3-0 victory over Sheffield United last time out in the tournament.

TEAM NEWS

Skinner confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the Reds have a full squad available, aside from defender Aoife Mannion, who is continuing to work her way back from a long-term knee injury. The boss also hinted that changes may be made from the XI that started the weekend’s win over Villa.

Alterations are also likely for Everton, as Sorensen suggested during his pre-match media earlier in the day. The Toffees will be without Megan Finnigan, Katrine Veje and Clare Wheeler who are all sidelined. Izzy Christiansen, their captain, is expected to return to the squad following a recent injury, but United goalkeeper Emily Ramsey, who is on a season-long loan with the Merseysiders, is ineligible to feature.

How will Skinner pick our XI to face Everton?

CONTI CUP STATE OF PLAY

United have two points from our first two games – following draws with Aston Villa and Durham - and are currently occupying fourth spot in the five-team Group A. After four matches each have been played, the group winners will advance to the next round, while the runner-up with the most points across the five groups will also progress to the next round (currently Manchester City in Group B with six points), where European-competing sides Arsenal and Chelsea will enter the competition too.

Aston Villa currently top Group A with six points from three matches, followed by Everton in second (five from two) and Durham in third (four from three). Sheffield United are bottom with one point from their two matches so far.

United know that a win in 90 minutes on Wednesday will take us level on points with, and potentially above, Everton, while a defeat in normal time would see us eliminated with a game to spare.

HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD

The sides have met 11 times in total, with United notching nine wins, including victory on Merseyside soil earlier this season: a 3-0 triumph when the sides met in the WSL back in October. This will be the teams' third clash in 2022, the first coming at Old Trafford in March.

It's also the fifth consecutive campaign in which the Reds and Toffees have been drawn together in this competition. Marc Skinner’s side won last season's cup tie 2-0, with a Danielle Turner own goal and a Martha Thomas strike proving enough for all three points on the night at Walton Hall Park.
